Selective Enrollment Exam Tutoring
Customized 1-1 Selective Enrollment Exam tutoring provides your 8th grader both the knowledge and confidence one needs to succeed on Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Selective Enrollment Exam. Our tutors work with students to develop a customized study plan that covers key facts and concepts as well as test taking strategies, helping them build on their strengths and address their weaknesses.
About the Selective Enrollment Exam
The Selective Enrollment Exam used by Chicago Public Schools is a 3 hour test given to eighth grade students from October through January. This exam is for students seeking admission to one of ten Selective Enrollment High Schools who have achieved at least a 24% in Reading and Math on the MAP test. The main exam tests 'core knowledge': reading, language, vocabulary, and mathematics.
CPS does not provide details on specific questions or publish practice materials to help students prepare. However, some test prep companies do claim to offer a specific curriculum designed to help you perform well on the selective enrollment exam. Based on our experience helping students prepare, we are confident that the test mirrors other popular tests administered to students in 8th grade seeking admission to selective high school, such as the High School Placement Exam. We recommend preparing with a simple test prep book from Barron's and a customized study plan.

Our Approach to 1-1 Selective Enrollment Exam Tutoring
CPS Selective Enrollment exam tutoring from MyGuru is a customized experience consisting of 5 to 15 (more or less can also be done) hours of one-on-one instruction from an experience, expert CPS selective enrollment exam tutor. (delivered in your home or a local library). Students complete a diagnostic practice test to identify strengths & weaknesses (from the Barron's HSPT prep book we recommend). The first session involves a review of this diagnostic test, an overview of each section of the test, and development of a study plan. This is followed by a series of one or two hour sessions in which strategies for each section of the test are reviewed & practice problems are completed.
Our typical package provides a total of 15 hours of customized, 1-on-1 tutoring. Portions of these tutoring sessions will include review of practice tests the student completes on their own time between sessions to measure and track progress.
