GRE & GMAT Quadratics Webinar: July 22, 2020

MyGuru's Director of Online Tutoring introduces & demonstrates how to solve quadratic equations on the GRE & GMAT.

GMAT & GRE Quadratics Defined

  • Assume these questions can be addressed by factoring or 'FOILing' (distributing) to solve
  • The quadratic equation should not be necessary (too time consuming)
  • FOIL = First, Outside, Inside, Last

Steps for GRE & GMAT Quadratic Factoring

  • Every quadratic has to be set equal to zero in order to solve
  • Create binomial parentheses with the first term inserted
  • Consider the required operations in binomials using constant by determining if it's lesser or greater than zero
  • Consider factors of constant to determine which will sum correctly to coefficient of middle term
  • Remember that the solutions (also known as the roots) of the equation are the values of x that produce a quantity of zero

A few things to remember as MyGuru's Director of Online Tutoring takes attendees through questions found on Official GRE & GMAT practice exams:

  • Plugging in is so much faster than trying to use the quadratic equation
  • Common quadratic identities (memorize this rather than the quadratic equation)
  • The quadratic formula (only for informational purposes)
