Analytical Writing 

  • Common to both exams 
  • GRE: Consists of two essays - issue and argument, 30 minutes each 
  • GMAT: Only the argument essay, 30 minutes

  • Good writing can help a little bit, bad writing can hurt substantially 
  • You want a 4, 5, 6

How are essays scored? 

  • Same for both exams 
  • There are two scorers, a human and a computer (disagreements resolved by 3rd party)
  • 0-6 in .5 increments 

Looking for: 

  1. Answer the question (stay on topic)
  2. Structure/Organizational style/Flow
  3. Analytical ability - demonstrate critical thinking 
  4. Writing style 
  5. Grammar & proper English 

How to structure your time

  • 1-2 minutes to read (actively)
  • 2-3 minutes to outline 
  • Write (4 paragraphs) 
    • 1) Intro
      • demonstrate understanding of the argument and recognize that it is flawed 
    • 2) Body paragraph 
      • Discuss one or more of the flaws
    • 3) Body paragraph
      • Discuss one or more of the flaws
    • 4) Conclusion 
      • Restate the thesis
