Scheduling, Payment & Cancellation Policies

Thanks for considering MyGuru for your 1-1 tutoring or test prep needs.  This page covers important details regarding how MyGuru operates and how to provide payment.

General MyGuru Overview

Our independently contracted team of expert tutors is currently concentrated in the Chicago area, but we are expanding throughout the Midwest.  Each tutor has at least 3 years of experience tutoring or teaching, extremely high test scores, and oftentimes holds a Masters, PhD, or certified teaching degree.  We don’t have any hard and fast rules on where our tutors were educated, but we want students to be impressed and motivated by their tutor – so, most of our tutors attended schools such as Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Notre Dame, or the University of Illinois.  About 10% of applicants are accepted and brought onto the team.  We were founded by Northwestern University graduate students.

MyGuru’s tutors prefer to focus on tutoring or teaching, not on finding students by marketing themselves or discussing payment and pricing issues.  So, as a student, you’ll interact with your tutor to finalize the time and location for your sessions, but you’ll provide payment directly to MyGuru according to the process below – MyGuru also follows up with students to collect and track feedback.

Pricing Guidelines

In the initial phone or email conversation with a MyGuru Managing Tutor, a student is quoted a base hourly rate (unless they are inquiring about a tutoring package, which includes 15 hours of tutoring + materials).  This base hourly rate is almost always between $45 and $70 (http://www.myguruedge.com/our-pricing/ ), depending on the subject, experience level of the tutor, travel requirements, etc.  We strive to provide excellent value for the money.

Starting with the base rate, students receive discounts for investing in blocks of tutoring in advance:

  • 1-4 sessions = 0% off
  • 5-9 = 5%
  • 10-14 = 10%
  • 15 or more = 15%

Payment Process

Payments can be made via any major credit card, or via check – though all initial sessions need to be paid for in advance with a credit card.  Students provide payment via email-based invoices from Google Checkout.  The process is simple – you receive an email from Google Checkout or visit this portion of our web-site, click a link, and provide payment info via a secure platform.

Paying for your First Session

All new students are required to pay for their first session via credit card in advance, unless explicit arrangements have been asked for and agreed to.  During the process of being connected with your assigned tutor, MyGuru will send you a Google Checkout email-based invoice or direct you to the appropriate portion of our web-site.  We’ll email you and your tutor, and communicate that you should expect to hear from the tutor within 24 hours to finalize timing and location of your sessions.  Then, once you provide payment, the session is confirmed.

Paying for Subsequent Sessions

 After that initial session, you have four basic options:

  1. Request a refund if you believe you didn’t get anything out of the session
  2. Let us know that things went well, but you just don’t need more tutoring right now
  3. Let us know that things went fine, but you’d like to try a different tutor that might be a better “fit” for you
  4. Let us know that you’d like to invest in more sessions – just specify the # of hours you’d like to start with.  You can request another invoice if you want to pay by credit card, or you can mail a check  (we’ll provide an address).

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel a session, please do so prior to 24 hours before it’s scheduled.  If you cancel within that time range, we reserve the right to charge a late cancellation fee in the amount of 75% of the cost of the session.  This policy is in place to respect the schedules of our tutors.
